The Chairmaker's Workshop: Handcrafting Windsor and Post-And-Rung Chairs
Published in Hardcover by Lark Books (October, 1997)
Authors: Drew Langsner and Bobbe Needham
Average review score:

We need more woodworking books like this one!
There are few woodworking books that cover a subject as well as this one. It isn't so much the depth of the coverage, but the completeness with which this book gives you the necessary information to cover the projects in question.

The book deals with tools, techniques, and has plans for just the chairs the average person drawn to this subject will want. That may sound fairly typical, but take tools. We don't just get a few pictures and lines per tool, we get information on how to build tools like a travishers, shaving horse, how to grind drill bits, or sharpen the specific tools the chairmaker will use. You get all the information you will need, and none of what does not apply to the subject. Drew is a retailer, teacher, tool designer, even takes tours to tool makers, so when he tells you about tools that's it.

Every part of the book has that kind of focus and concision. There are instructions on a workbench, but it isn't the usual kind, but obviously a chairmaking bench. I have a cabinetmaker's bench, and don't need one for chairs, but if you did, it's there.

Drew is an authority on certain chairs, and they're covered here. He isn't perhaps as much of an expert on Windsor chairs. But he brings all the necessary info into the book. I have a set of plans from Dunbar (the authority), but these plans leave all the critical measurements out. To get those, you have to take a Dunbar course. But the dimensions are here, and there is a chapter on how to develop your own plans, with an exhaustive table of angles that you can apply to any design. No nonsense, no holding back.

I wish more woodworking books were like this one. All the necessary information, on a prime topic. No necessity to bring together 5 other books to cover related topic. A large number of detailed plans for the most important pieces. As technical or as direct as you want. This book has book-depth information, with magazine like style (meaty sidebars) and currency of information.

The author holds nothing back, even though every word he writes might take away from his opportunity to sell you a tool, or a course. He just tells it straight regardless.

A masterpiece.

Worth every penny.
I thumbed through this book in a store. It is amazing. It has so much detailed information. Not only does is show you how to build a few different chairs, it shows you plenty of techniques that would be useful in other areas of woodworking. There are lots of sidebars on making tools, a chapter with tips for sharpening various tools with strange profiles, it even goes into great detail on how to split up big logs into the various pieces one needs to make a chair.

The only reason I didn't buy it was that my lunch hour was over, and the checkout line was way too long. I'll get it tonight on the way home from work.

The Best Windsor Chairmaking Book
Drew has spent years studying, building, and designing Windsor chairs. His book goes into great depth on Windsor chairmaking history, styles, and constructing techniques. He takes you step by step until the chair is fully completed. One needs to read and reread to fully grasp all given details on chairmaking. He is perhaps the only chairmaker which has spent the time getting all the information one needs to determine such custom features as setting the seat and leg angles for each type of chair made to fit your needs. You will be sure to try your hand at making your own Windsor after reading Drew's book.

Birthright : Christian, Do You Know Who You Are?
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (July, 1999)
Author: David C. Needham

A book worth reading again and again thru a lifetime
Of the grace-life, exchanged life books I have read, few have so clearly and directly dealt with my questions and given such perfect illustrations. A must have!

This book is a masterpiece!
I read the original Birthright in college over twenty years ago and still have the original book which now has yellowed pages. I highly value Birthright and give new free ones to friends and family as if it were a priceless treasure...which it is. Birthright will start you on a journey in the book of Romans that will change your life. I still re-read Birthright occasionaly and find new nuggets of truth in the Bible to this day. A true Christian identity is hard to find, but I have found it thanks to David C. Needham! Trace F.

Rich!
Needham is a master at clarifying his thoughts on paper. If you have ever wanted to get past the "churchy" terms to understand what the book of Romans is really about, this is a book for you. It especially deals with how we are positionally in our relationship with Christ. Because I found Nedham's commentary to be so rich with truth, I had to read this book slowly so I could savor every morsel. Great book!

Her Secret Guardian

Heart-wrenching!
Oh man, what a heart-wrenching story. By halfway through it I was head-over-heels in love with Simon (truly a hero!) & totally dreading what was to come for him. This is a story about a 20 yr old crime against man, about love & forgiveness. Even though I knew it would turn out ok, I still hated what Simon was going to have to live through. Ms. Needham does know how to write a good story & stir up your emotions. I liked the fact that although Simon was keeping a HUGE secret from Kailey (which I usually don't like), LN had a truly acceptable reason for it (in this case it really was to protect Kailey & her future). I'll have to admit though that it's not a writing style that I'd want to read often; although LN wrapped it all up very nicely, I was still so sad when I was finished with it. However, I'm sure that many others would really like it cause I know that others don't always go for the light-hearted, humous kind of books that I usually want.

Her Secret Guardian, Linda Needham
Simon's past holds a terrible secret, but instead of hiding from it, he marries the woman who is a constant reminder of his transgression. When Kailey discovers the truth behind her father's death, only her forgiveness can heal Simon.

Good
This was a very nice book to read. I will keep it to read again

Beastly Abodes: Homes for Birds, Bats, Butterflies & Other Backyard Wildlife
Published in Paperback by Lark Books (August, 1996)
Author: Bobbe Needham
Average review score:

Excellent, informative, and fun!
This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever had. There are lots of fun projects with detailed instructions. If you enjoy your animal neighbors, you should get this book.

Best book I've seen on houses for wildlife.
The most complete and innovative book on bird houses I've seen yet. Not only that, it has houses and other structures for bats, butterflies, squirrels, bees and toads. I especially like the variety and creativity of the "abodes" -- natural looking, not cutesy. The section on what each type of wildlife needs is especially welcome. I read this book in the library and had to make it part of my permanent collection.

This book is very informative and clearly written.
This book provides serveral varieties of houses for different animals. The instructions are well written and easy to do. Also, the book provides information about where to place the completed houses and why the houses will attract animals.

2,000 Years of Christ's Power: Part One: The Age of the Early Church Fathers
Published in Paperback by Evangelical Pr (July, 1998)
Author: Nicholas R. Needham
Average review score:

A Gem of a Survey
This is simply one of the most enjoyable and readable surveys of the early church that I have ever read! Dr. Needham's goal for this series is to strike a much needed balance between accessibility for the non-specialist, and scholarly integrity. In this first volume, he accomplishes this task admirably, and both the interested layman, and more advanced student can profit from this text.

Dr. Needham does a commendable job tying the events of church history to their broader historical and philosophical context. His treatment of the many complex theological debates that shaped the early church is both clear and concise, and his exposition of the worship and practice of the early church is both fascinating and refreshing.

The end of each chapter has a section of carefully selected primary source materials, which serve to give the reader limited exposure to the writings of some of the figures discussed in the preceding chapter. Several helpful but unspectacular maps can be found within, along with over a dozen illustrations. A nice glossary of terms and bibliography can also be found at the back.

Thus far my only major criticism of this book would have to be the binding. Simply put, it is rather cheap and unlikely to take much wear. That not withstanding, I can't recommend this text enough, and eagerly look forward to the other volumes in this series.

An exciting overview
Needham has done an excellent job with this 4-book series of giving his readers a big-picture of Church History. He does not cover material at great depth, but deals with the major characters, issues, and events that have shaped the history of the Christian church in enough detail to leave his readers with a good idea of how they each fit together in space and time.

The first book is concerned with the period of the Church Fathers; the second, the Middle Ages (including the foundation and early character of Islam); the third, the Reformation; and the fourth, the Post-reformation to the Modern age.

Needham correctly believes that Christians today can learn and profit from the lessons of the past: the battles that have already been fought, the issues that have already been debated, the leaders who have come before us, etc. And he is able to present all this information in a manner that leaves Christians excited about the great work Christ has done through His church, from the first century through to our own day.

Orthodox Christian reader
I picked up Needham's book on a visit to England last fall. It is an excellent volume on early Church history. Written in a style that is easy to read and understand and easily holds one's interest, in my opinion it contains information every serious Christian should know but is rarely talked about. Most Christians think of Christian history only in terms of the last 500 years--since the Protestant Reformation in the 1500's. In fact, the foundations of our Christian faith were laid rather in the first 500 years of Church history, which Needham does a thorough job of presenting. I recommend it highly!

Ever His Bride
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Avon (July, 1997)
Author: Linda Needham
Average review score:

Truly delightful; worthy of five stars!
While Ever His Bride is only the second Linda Needham book I've read, it is the second Needham book to get five stars from me. (The Wedding Night won my first five-star rating.) Needham is an excellent storyteller. I am engrossed by the plot, charmed by the hero and heroine and fairly "swooning" with the passion. If you love Loretta Chase, Amanda Quick and Mary Jo Putney; then you'll love Linda Needham. She creates characters that are easy to love and who are so attracted to each other that the book sizzles with its intensity from page one. Bravo, Ms. Needham!

Great
This was a great book!! I loved everything about it. The female lead was strong but not irritating. I loved Hunter and all his insecurities. I highly recommend it.

Hunter got more than he bargained for.
EVER HIS BRIDE blends Scrooge, Oliver Twist,
Beauty and the Beast and a bit of Robin Hood
into a poignant tale of the true meaning of
fortune.--LAM

The Big Mango
Published in Paperback by Asia Books Co Ltd (01 December, 2000)
Author: Jake Needham
Average review score:

The Big Mango Is The Best Meal!
It's been some time since I first read this fantastic novel by Jake Needham in 1999 so now I'm going to review this incredible piece of literary artwork.
The Big Mango immdediately reveals Mr.Needham's massive understanding of Bangkok, how life operates there on a daily basis and Thailand in general. This story is lovable because it combines action-adventure with wit, intelligence and humor. Likewise, the characters are enjoyable to stay with because they are realistic individuals with much-more-than-average characterization.
The story starts with an interesting theory at the end of the Vietnam War and speeds along at light-speed to the present where the main character,Eddie Dare, finds himself sucked from a so-so existance in San Francisco to a return to Southeast Asia where questionable theories, lies and outright danger await him at nearly every step he takes on the traffic-clogged streets and sois of the Big Mango, Bangkok herself.
Jake Needham is typical of the magnificent breed of expat authors in Thailand who have a master's touch in explaining how life flows throughout 21st Century Siam and making you, the reader, want more and more of their writing as you tear from one page to the next.I can't reccomend this book enough times!

Fabulous!
I discovered The Big Mango while living in Hong Kong along with Needham's second novel, The Laundryman. Needham's writing was so compelling that I had no choice but to visit Bangkok for the weekend!

Clearly recognizing the popularity of novels that involve high stakes global intrigue, money laundering, smuggling of drugs and currency, and international intelligence agencies, Needham's Big Mango incapsulates all of these themes. It reminds me of Grisham books only this is far, far better!

The Simple-Minded Manager: Cutting Through Your Work-Life Chaos
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Intercare21st Publishing (18 July, 2000)
Authors: Forrest C. Greenslade, Forrest C. Greenslade, Kristin Needham, and Kathryn E. Greenslade
Average review score:

Practical Guidance Gained From Practical Experience
In the spirit of "The One Minute Manager", this book provides practical hands-on guidance for dealing with real issues. Although rooted in such grand concepts as Integrity, Ethics, Honesty and Principle it is a practical book. In fact, it is because of this that it is a practical and useful book for day-to-day-manangement of work and life.

It's About Simple!
Dr. Greenslade offers helpful hints in basic management. In a world of high tech, and numerous books available on "how to manage" properly, we often overlook the "simple": -management is relationships- with your subordinates, your colleagues and your friends. Greenslade helps marry (manage) your personal and business life, to survive the chaos at work and focus on common ground and objectives; it is garnered from his own extensive management experiences in various biomedical industries. It also teaches you to care for yourself, and others. It reflects his own experiences in past "management chaos" in an honest and forthright manner. Utilizing those experiences, allowed him to "seize his own day" and pass on to others ways to "simplify, simplify, simplify" management. A valuable tool in the continuous quest to "manage" in a way that people and businesses can "grow together".

successful simple minded approach for a complex world
The clarity, brevity and sincerity of the author shines through with advice which can be life altering to the serious reader.

Caesar: Politician and Statesman
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (October, 1985)
Authors: Matthias Gelzer and Peter Needham
Average review score:

The classic biography of Caesar
In writing a Web biography of Julius Caesar, I read dozens of books trying to explain this chameleon man, probably the most famous Roman who ever lived. And after it all, I came back to this as my firm choice as THE book to read if you want a comprehensive, scholarly, yet still fascinating excavation of everything we truly know about Caesar.

Gelzer's book is a classic on everyone's list. First published in German in 1921, Gelzer labored and rewrote it over half a century, reading and rethinking all the time. It was finally translated into English in the 1960's. As he modestly concludes, "Much has been written about Caesar. The appearance of despotic rulers [Stalin, Hitler] of quite a different stamp has not always been favourable to the judgment passed on him. A fresh study of the sources has, on the whole, convinced me of the correctness of my interpretation." Gelzer makes those sources lucid, explaining contradictions, noting where a history is political rather than factual, smoothing out inconsistencies and providing copious notes for the reader who wants to learn more. There is a clarity and precision to his writing that is oddly restful, yet continually interesting, for which we must thank the readable translation by Peter Needham.

In recent years, it has become fashionable to dismiss Caesar as a power-hungry megalomaniac, to psychoanlyze him, to portray him from every vantage point; but no one can deny his genius. Gelzer, unlike some modern biographers of Caesar, never strays from the facts; his thoughtful and precise narrative of every scintilla of truth remaining to us, takes you as close to the man as you are ever likely to get. About the true nature of Julius Caesar, every thinking reader must make up his own mind. Gelzer will give you the best tools to do so, while painting an unforgettable portrait of the failing Roman Republic.

Don't Buy This Book...
Do not buy this book if you're looking for gossip about Caesar's [love] life or his romance with Cleopatra. You're not going to find any dirt or gossip about his private life; just a very sober, well argued and researched political biography. Along the way you'll hopefully come to appreciate just how remarkable Caesar's accomplishments were, given the obstacles he had to overcome along the way. Among the points which Gelzer makes is how completely different the ancient Roman Republic was compared to our modern ideas of a democratic republic. In fact, it was nothing more than an oligarchy where leadership changed hands among a rich, and ambitious elite. By Caesar's time this political system was on its last legs and it was inevitable that a general leading an army was going to overthrow the whole system at some point. While it's true that Octavian(Augustus)deserves credit for creating the system of government which ruled the empire he inherited,it's also true that he wouldn't have been able to do this had Caesar not paved the way before him. Add to this the fact that he was able to do just about anything better than any of his contemporaries and you begin to see why has continued to remain such a fascinating (and controversial)figure down through history.

Scholarship of the very highest order
Gelzer produced a fantastic work with this seminal masterpiece. This is scholarship and historical analysis of the very highest order - ranks alongside Theodor Mommsen.

I've read no other work that measures up to Gelzer's biography of Rome's greatest citizen. His inspirational definition of what it is to be a politician versus that of Statesmanship is forever etched in my mind.

Those seeking contemporary pseudo-psychology, 'opinions and soundbites' need to look elsewhere as this is not Plutarch at his most irritating. A perfect counter-balance to the anecdotal and condensed approach of Plutarch.

Definitive and unsurpassed in its authority.
